The kindergarteners were excited to here that our Pope is in America this week for the first time! We learned who Pope Francis is and why he is so important to our Church. We even got to see him arrive at the airport and be greeted by the President. Our principle Miss Fiala was able to go visit Pope Francis in Philadelphia which is an amazing experience. We made sure to pray for her and everyone traveling to visit our Pope. What a wonderful event for the kindergarteners to learn about! We also learned a little more about the Pope and our faith when two seminarians came to visit our classroom. They taught us we are Catholic and how special it is to be Catholic. They will be visiting us for the first quarter. The kindergartners have been praying for the seminarians each day as they continue their journey to becoming a priest. Our faith is awesome and I'm glad my students get to learn about their faith in school! What a blessing!
What an exciting week! The seniors from our high school came to visit us! They will be coming once a month to do art projects, games, and different activities with the kindergarteners. This is part of the service project the seniors complete each year. We had fun coloring pictures with them and playing with our friends outside. The students are already asking when the seniors can visit again!
The students had a great time learning about the seasons. We know there are four seasons in a year: winter, spring, summer, and fall. We learned a fun song to remember all of them! During the week, the kindergartners got to be explorers and look at many trees outside. We talked about what they looked like during the summer and what will happen to them during the fall. We made a tree in art class and divided our tree into four sections. Each section represented a different season. The students had fun using their fingers to paint on the leaves!
On September 8th, our school had a special event for Mary our Mother’s Birthday. We first prayed a rosary with the whole school to honor Mary, and after, we all had ice cream to celebrate. We also enjoyed singing Happy Birthday to Mary with all the students! This year, St. Mary's school made a bouquet of flowers for Mary with special things each student would do for her on her birthday. Saying extra prayers, being nice to our friends, and listening to our parents were some of the things the students wrote on their flowers. It looks beautiful hanging up in our hallway!
The 3rd graders will be visiting the kindergartners on Friday afternoons, twice a month this year to read stories together. The students loved listening to the 3rd graders read and are looking forward to their next visit. Eventually, we will be able to read to our partners! It is a great opportunity for the them to learn from an older student and see how fun reading can be ! The Kindergarteners talked all about friends this week in Social Studies. We know that our friends are special to us and we talked about being good friends by reading a couple of stories. First, we read the story Enemy Pie. The story taught us that we need to get to know someone first before judging them. Instead of making an enemy pie, we decided to make a friendship pie in kindergarten. The students came up with 'ingredients' that would be in a good friendship. We wrote them on a chart and made our own pies to hang up. We also read the story Rainbow Fish and completed a special art project with it. Friends are great to have and I know we will all try our best to be great friends to everyone!
During our reading block, the students have a chance to work at six different centers. Each center has many hands-on activities for the students to complete. Some of the centers include building words and letters with play-dough, magnets, stamps, dot art, and markers. Another center allows the students to make patterns out of blocks and sort a variety of objects. We also have an iPad center where the students are able to use the Osmo system to match letters and eventually spell words. Each day they rotate to a new spot. Centers give students a chance to keep developing academic skills through hands-on activities which I enjoy seeing! Below are pictures of the students exploring the centers for the first time. I gave them a chance to see how each material worked before having them complete the activities.
